    Checking Compression

    • 1). Open the hood with the ignition off. Locate the spark plugs in the motor. Notice that there are 4 yellow wires running into the red engine, and that those are the spark plug wires attached to the spark plugs. Ignore the fifth wire that was left unattached when the motor was removed.

    • 2). Take the boot of the wire, which is the red end of the wire that attaches to the top of the plug, and carefully and gently wiggle it off. Gently place the spark plug removal tool on the leftmost spark plug, which protrudes from the motor. Turn the ratchet counter-clockwise, and remove the spark plug.

    • 3). Install the compression gauge in the spark plug hole. Start the car and read the gauge. Turn the car off. Write the gauge reading. Remove the compression gauge. Re-install the spark plug, and be extremely careful not to allow dirt in the motor. Take care not to cross-thread the plug by installing it at the wrong angle. Screw the plug in a couple of clockwise turns by hand, and only when you are certain that it is threaded properly, use the ratchet with the spark plug tool. Re-connect the plug wire to the plug.

    • 4). Remove the second wire. Remove the second spark plug. Install the compression gauge in the spark plug hole. Start the car and read the gauge. Turn the car off. Write the gauge reading. Remove the compression gauge. Re-install the spark plug. Re-connect the second spark plug wire.

    • 5). Remove the third wire. Remove the third spark plug. Install the compression gauge in the spark plug hole. Start the car and read the gauge. Turn the car off. Write the gauge reading. Remove the compression gauge. Re-install the spark plug. Re-connect the third spark plug wire.

    • 6). Remove the fourth wire. Remove the fourth spark plug. Install the compression gauge in the spark plug hole. Start the car and read the gauge. Turn the car off. Write the gauge reading. Remove the compression gauge. Re-install the spark plug. Re-connect the fourth spark plug wire.

    • 7). Compare your readings with the compression level recommended by the manufacturer.
