Many working and nontraditional students are unable to attend brick-and-mortar colleges and universities due to their demanding class schedules and specific geographic locations. Such students benefit from the flexibility and convenience of online learning. Fortunately for those interested in pursuing a journalism degree, a number of accredited universities offer online journalism degrees.

    University of Missouri

    • The University of Missouri offers an online graduate journalism program accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC), the independent accreditation board responsible for granting accreditation to qualified journalism programs. Students pursuing an online journalism degree must choose from one of two graduate specializations: media management and strategic communications. Students in both specializations are required to take 37 credit hours in core media and communications courses that are delivered via a centralized management system on an asynchronous schedule. This allows students to log in and view lectures at their convenience. In addition to the 37 credit hours of online coursework, students are also required to visit the physical campus twice during the program, once for a summer workshop in June and once to defend a required graduate thesis.

    University of Memphis

    • The University of Memphis offers both undergraduate and graduate online journalism degree programs accredited by ACEJMC. Students in the undergraduate program are required to take 120 credit hours of combined general studies courses and core journalism major courses. Students in the graduate program have the ability to choose between three degree options: a non-thesis degree option that requires 36 credit hours, a special project option that requires 33 credit hours and completion of a graduate project, and a thesis option that requires 30 credit hours and completion of a graduate thesis. Students in all of the online programs take live courses with their professors who are streamed using web conferencing technology.
