How Does the Heart Work with Other Organs to Keep the Body Healthy?

    Introduction

    • The heart is the most vital organ in the human body. The heart keeps you alive and ensures that the other organs are healthy. It is responsible for pumping blood through blood vessels and veins to reach the other organs in the body. The organs rely on the heart for its survival. Without the heart pumping blood throughout the body, the organs would not be able to function properly.

    The Lungs: Pulmonary Circulation

    • Pulmonary circulation is most commonly described as part of the cardiovascular system, which carries oxygen-depleted blood away from the heart to the lungs. In return, the lungs deliver oxygenated blood to the heart. With this process, deoxygenated blood leaves the right section of the heart through the pulmonary arteries. It enters the lungs, and oxygenated blood comes through the pulmonary veins. From the pulmonary veins, the blood moves to the left atrium, where it is transferred to the left ventricle where the blood is pumped into the aorta. The heart and lungs work together to deliver safe, oxygenated blood to the body.

    Systemic Circulation

    • Systemic circulation is part of the cardiovascular system that delivers oxygenated blood from the heart into the body. The oxygenated blood enters the left atrium where it is transferred to the left ventricle. The left ventricle pumps the blood through the body through the aorta. The aorta, the largest artery in the body, is the area where the blood passes to the head, arms, hands, chest, legs and feet. The oxygenated blood from the heart carries oxygen and nutrients to the organs of the body. The blood also picks up waste from the organs. A healthy heart supplies organs with the correct amount of blood at the correct rate. If the heart is afflicted with disease or injury, your body's organs won't receive enough blood to work normally.
