    • Your outdoor table can be made of wood, plastic or metal. Examine the maintenance involved in each type. A plastic table can easily be wiped off and hosed down with water. Exposure to the elements, such as rain, won't damage it. It's the least expensive, but it can be flimsy. A metal table will last the longest and won't be damaged by rain, but it can rust if it's not adequately maintained. It can also be expensive. A wood table may require periodic varnishing to maintain its appearance. It's sturdy, and some wood tables are relatively inexpensive.

    • Outdoor tables come in a wide variety of shapes. You can choose a round table, which can facilitate a group conversation among your guests. Rectangular tables usually seat more people than square ones. Many round tables have a hole in the middle in which a patio umbrella can be placed, but you can find square and rectangular tables with this feature at some outdoor patio furniture stores.

    • Determine how many people you'd like to seat at your table. If the table is just for you, choose a small one that won't take up too much space in your backyard. If you plan to host events, such as picnics, barbecues or birthday parties, you'll need a large table that can seat at least 8 to 10 people. A small table may work well for you if you are just looking for a decorative touch for your yard.
