Can't open docs after scanning

After I scan a document using my HP 1310, I am unable to open it. I click on the file to open it but I keep getting the following message:

JAVA VIRTUAL MACHINE LAUNCHER

Invalid or corrupt jarfile:C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\scan.pdf

Can someone tell me how to fix this problem? I am using Windows XP Service Pack 2. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
