I am planning to have solaris on my P4 based PC. Can anybody advise me Plus and Minus of having this software. If we are in a networked environment, Can we use Solaris X86 as host to connect to other Solaris based servers.. if then what is the relevence of products like Humming bird's EXCEED which are very expensive

Make sure to use a recent solaris 8 release (7/2001 or newer), the first fewrelease of solaris 8 x86 didn't support pentium 4 cpus...

Watch out !!! all the drivers are not existing for Solaris INtel, I had problems withATI Video boards, and Dell ethernet boards except that you can try Solaris Intel works fine.

I think Solaris is the best Unix operating system.

Soon in December will release Solaris 9 Intel 12/02 and I recommended wait for this release.

Early Access of Solaris 9 Intel 12/02 will start in the middle of November.

I am using Solaris 8 Intel 2/02 and all works fine.

Excellent product!

Solaris on x86 is great. It runs FAST. I'd recommend a dual processor system, if possible.

I have integrated Solaris x86 machines with Solaris SPARC machines with no problems. In fact, they integrate rather seamlessly and without much effort. Thanks to the OS being identical.

One of the gotchas is to make sure your components are in the HCL. You can make lots of things work, but if they're on the HCL, things will go more smoothly for you.

Good luck.
