3510 SC: Expanding a RAID5 volume

Current config 5x73GB RAID5 + 1 Global Spare, this is the only volume in the array.

We intend to add 2x73GB and expand the current RAID5 volume.

I understand the 'how to' but I would like to know if anyone has accidentally destroyed the volume (or data on it) by expanding it, or if there are any negative impacts (i.e. performance) by expanding it versus rebuilding the volume from scratch.

I would prefer not to destroy the data currently on the volume but if there are known major performance impacts then I would schedule the time necessary for full backup, build, and full restore.

Thank you very much for your time and expertise,

Michael

Thank you all who have read this post. I decided to call Sun and open a case to address this question.

Sun's response was that although you can expand the logical drive using this method it does not expand the disk which is currently presented to the host. The new disk will still have the same target number but have a new lun number (additional disk(s)).

Your other option was to backup, destroy, recreate, restore.

The engineer I had spoken with indicated there may be some unofficial methods of performing what I did want to do but these methods are not backed by Sun and may degrade the performance.

I am not willing to take the risk of potential data corruption and/or performance degradation.

Take care out there and keep your servers up!

Michael
