we cannot get to the solaris prompt. at all. the manual doesn't cover this problem. what we are doing is we have a laptop plugged into the LOM port on the back of the server and we are connected using hyperterminal. so the first prompt we see is the LOM prompt we need to find out how to get to the regular solaris prompt but when we type 'console' at the LOM prompt it sends 'Console not shared'.
Thanks
I have exactly the same problem on my V120. I can talk to the LOM just fine through the Serial A/LOM port. But, any attempt to get to the console (reset, break, console commands) just prints "Console is not shared". Consequently, I can't boot this computer. The instructions at the end of chapter 8 of the "Server User's Guide" (<a href="http://supportforum.sun.com/hardware/index.php?t=emailconf&conf_k ey=2576984c22e4fddb18e9aebabaf8afe8" target="_blank"> http://supportforum.sun.com/hardware/index.php?t=emailconf&a mp;conf_key=2576984c22e4fddb18e9aebabaf8afe8</a>)
do not help in this situation as they assume you are at the Solaris prompt in order to set the console in shared mode. Obviously, if you can't boot the computer to get to Solaris, you can't set this mode. There doesn't seem to be a way to activate shared mode only from the LOM, at least not a documented one.
Help!
Hello!!
I am having the exact same issue that is depicted in this forum. However, I do not have a Service Contract with Sun, so the document that is listed at the bottom of the forum is not available to me.
I cannot believe Sun sells such expensive servers and then we have to pay extra for support.... Anyways, I just would like to know if you were able to resolve the issue here or if you could kindly provide me the information from the link I have no access to.
I've tried everything I know so far to resolve this issue and I always get the same message from LOM: Console is not shared, I'm going nuts already !!
Thanks in advance for the help !!

Zac,
The document that is linked above is SRDB 78349, from the Contracts-only Symptoms & Resolutions Database.
The whole point of having a service contract is to have access to a greater amount of intellectual property.
Sun is not the only company that does that.
It is very common.
You will either have a warranty on that computer system or you can have a service contract that includes the computer on the contract line list.
You <i><u>do</u></i> have the option of opening a service case on a Time-and-Materials basis. You would be charged for access to the information.
It will NOT be low-cost, but you would get your answer.
My guess is that one such T&M case would pay for more than a years' service contract.
By the way, I'm sure that if anyone pasted the contents of the document into this forum, the moderating staff would just delete it.
Such a posting would violate the forum's <a href="http://www.sun.com/termsofuse.html" target="_blank">Terms of Use</a> that you agreed to when you registered.
